The other legend from the Puranas says the four-day festival begins with Narak-Chaturdashi, with the second day being Lakshmi Puja, the third the New Year or Bali Pratipada and the fourth Bhai-Duj.

The days before Diwali the shops are crowded with families buying clothes, gifts and jewellry.
