Amarinder Singh, Advani discuss water commission

Onkar Singh in New Delhi | May 20, 2003 03:04 IST

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh met Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani on Monday and discussed the possibility of setting up a water commission to settle the dispute over water distribution between his state, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

A top official of the home ministry told rediff.com that Singh will also meet Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to sort out this matter.

Punjab has been directed by the Supreme Court to complete the Sutlej-Yamuna link canal within one year. The judgment was given last year. Punjab has filed a revision petition before the court, which awaits hearing.

Singh, however, refused to disclose anything on the water dispute to newsmen waiting outside Advani's house. " I am the home minister of Punjab and I had come to discuss the law and order situation and other security related issues with Advaniji," he said.

Reacting to media reports that militancy is again taking roots in the state, Singh said he has got no inputs from the intelligence agencies to that effect.

"I do keep on reading a few news reports to that effect. But let me assure you that there is nothing of that sort happening. The people of Punjab want peace and we are not going to allow militancy at any cost," he told rediff.com.
