Turkish airliner hijacked

rediff Newdesk | March 29, 2003 04:50 IST

A Turkish Airlines flight from Istanbul to Ankara was hijacked on Friday night, according to the Anatolia news agency.

The plane, which took off at 2200 hours Turkish time,  at first headed towards the Aegean coastal city of Izmir, it quoted NTV television as saying.

Later, the Airbus 310 plane, with 204 people on board, landed in Athens, Greece, NTV said.

"There has been no message so far," Turkey's transportation minister Binali Yildirim told NTV.

Two members of the governing party and one opposition member of parliament were among those on board, reports said.

The reports said that the destination of the hijacker/hijackers was Berlin, Germany, and they had stopped at Athens only for a refuel.
