Communal clash in Baroda, 4 hurt

Shyama Thakkar in Baroda | March 14, 2003 19:19 IST

Four people were injured in a communal clash in Baroda on Friday.

According to Police Commissioner Deendayal Tuteja, "Two communities clashed near an old lake in Fatehpura area when Muslims were cooling their tajiyas."

"I think it was planned," Tuteja said.

A witness told rediff.com, "More than 1,000 Muslims had gathered by 4pm and more were coming to Sarsaiya lake area when the crowd got berserk and burnt two police vehicles. In defence, police fired teargas shells and a few rounds in the air. It took no time for the neighboring Kumbharwada area to respond."

The crowd also beat up Kirti Padiya, a photographer with a local daily, when he tried to take pictures. His camera was broken and gold chain snatched.

Tuteja said, "Situation is under control and no death has been reported."
