Congress claims victory in Punjab panchayat polls

June 30, 2003 15:58 IST

The Congress has claimed victory in 65-70 per cent of the 12,337 panchayats in Punjab, which went to polls on Monday.

Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said the Congress polled less than 50 per cent votes in only three districts - Mansa, Moga and Nawanshahar - of the 17 in the state.

The party polled the highest 90 per cent votes in Gurdaspur district and lowest 42 per cent in Mansa district, he said.

Asked how these percentages were calculated when the polls were not contested on party lines, Singh said affiliations of those elected were known.

The chief minister said 75.23 per cent of the 1.30 crore voters cast their votes.

Repolling in 33 villages will take place on July 13, he said, adding that 2,177 panchayats, which elected their leaders unanimously, would be paid Rs 200,00 each as reward.
