Muslim body pans Kanchi seer's comments

July 05, 2003 15:22 IST

The All India Babri Masjid Action Committee on Saturday panned Kanchi Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati's comment that there is no need for a new mosque in Ayodhya.

"This proposal is rejected outright by us... Muslims do not want to construct a mosque at any other place. It will be built at the original site only," the committee's convenor, Zafaryab Jilani, told NDTV 24x7 channel.

Asserting that Muslims do not recognise panchkosi parikrama, he asked if the several mosques in the area would be demolished.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board said the shankaracharya's comment would be discussed on Sunday, when it meets to consider his proposal on the Ayodhya issue.

It will discuss 'how much importance it can give to the commitment of the Kanchi seer to ensure compliance from all the parties involved in the dispute', board spokesperson Maulana Sajjad Nomani said.
