HC grants bail to 10 Godhra carnage accused

February 04, 2003 05:08 IST

The Gujarat high court on Monday granted conditional bail to 10 persons allegedly part of the mob that set ablaze the S-6 coach of the Sabarmati Express at Godhra railway station on February 27 last year.

As many as 59 persons were killed in the incident, which was followed by communal violence in many parts of Gujarat.

Justice D H Vaghela directed the accused -- Siraj Sheikh, Shabbir Mohammed, Ahmed Majid, Anwar Majid, Sikandar Pathan, Ahmed Sonthiya, Tayab Aziz, Ishq Musalman, Mafat Ashraf and Mohammed Ali Sheikh -- to furnish a bond of Rs 10,000 each, not to leave the country, surrender their passports to the police and report to the concerned police station on a regular basis.

They have been booked under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code.
