In the days before electricity Christmas trees used to be decorated with candles, candies, fruits and gingerbread.
Today the tree is lit up with colourful electric bulbs, tinsel hollies, and mistletoe.
Wafer-shaped stars, angels, hearts, flowers and bells add glitter to the tree. Tree decorations are symbolic of the newborn Christ.
