Badal, son arrested, sent to Patiala jail

December 01, 2003 17:29 IST

Former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and son Sukhbir Singh Badal were on Monday sent to jail after a Patiala court rejected their bail pleas in the disproportionate assets case.

Badal was the chief minister of Punjab thrice, while son Sukhbir is a Member of Parliament.

Shiromani Akali Dal workers came out in the streets protesting the arrest of Badal and his son. The protests claimed one life. Twenty-four other persons, including 15 policemen and three women, were injured.

Special Judge S K Goyal sent the two Badals to judicial custody till December 13 and adjourned their pleas for regular bail to December 3.

Badal's wife Surender Kaur, who is also one of the six accused in the case, did not appear due to illness.

Immediately after the court order, Badal and his son were sent to Patiala jail. The 79-year-old SAD chief's NRI relative Narottam Singh Dhillon is already out on bail.

The regular bail pleas of two other accused – Badal family's Manager Harbans Lal and associate Jagnandan Singh, who are presently in judicial custody -- are also to come up before the court on December 3.
