Such grand idols obviously attract crowds. Sanjay Sawant, vice-chairman of the Lalbaug Sarvajanik Ganeshotsava Mandal, Ganesh Galli, told rediff.com they expect at least 35,000 devotees per day to visit the site during the 10-day festival.

With so many people likely to visit, security is a big concern. This week's blasts has increased that concern. Security measures were discussed at a recent meeting among various Ganesh Mandals, the state government and Police Commissioner Ranjit S Sharma.

The Ganesh Galli Mandal has hired a private security agency, apart from its 400 volunteers.
