'Leaders today are sucking people's blood'

I have been in Tihar jail for the last eight years because of a murder case.

I am now a commerce graduate from the Jawaharlal Nehru Open University although I was almost illiterate when I arrived here.

I am aware that India acquired Independence 55 years ago. Our freedom fighters gave their blood to acquire freedom. But the leaders today are sucking people's blood.

The India of my dreams is where everybody is literate and has a means of livelihood. Otherwise, corruption will continue, crime will grow, the scenario is already grim.

India's politicians will have to prove their worth. I feel people will not tolerate misfits. Nation building requires honesty and hard work. You can say that of the masses, but not of crooked politicians.

Our political leadership has to be more responsible. Otherwise, there is no hope for the country even in the next 50 years.

As told to Tara Shankar Sahay
