Rail zone in Bihar after 36 years

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

After a gap of 36 years, a railway zone will become operational in Bihar from October 1, 2002.

The inauguration of the East Central Railway zone, headquartered in Hajipur, will be a low-key affair in view of the recent accident involving the Rajdhani Express.

The last railway zone created in India was the South Central zone in 1966.

The British had divided the Indian Railways into 42 parts, but after Independence, the government created nine zones.

It 1996, the United Front government decided to create six more zones. In June this year, notifications were issued for the formation of the East Central zone and North Western Railway zone at Jaipur, Rajasthan.

Interestingly, the creation of the East Central Railway zone had brought together all political parties in Bihar. Never before had the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Bharatiya Janata Party joined hands in this fashion.

The aim was to present a united face while locking horns with West Bengal, which had bitterly opposed the breaking up of the Eastern Railway zone to create a zone in Hajipur.

Even the Bihar assembly unanimously adopted a resolution thanking Railway Minister Nitish Kumar for creation of the zone. The feeling is that it would boost development in their state.
