Tamil Nadu to boycott Cauvery panel meet

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday said state Chief Secretary Sugavaneshwar will not attend the Cauvery Monitoring Committee meeting scheduled for September 29 in Bangalore.

"The matter is sub judice, and we will be committing contempt of the Supreme Court if we attend the [monitoring committee] meeting," she said.

In this context, the Tamil Nadu chief minister referred to the Supreme Court notice to Karnataka Chief Minister S M Krishna and others on a contempt plea by the state, earlier in the day.

Sugavaneshwar had written to the CMC convenor and Union Water Resource Secretary A K Goswami expressing inability to attend the meeting, and citing similar reasons.

Both Jayalalithaa and Sugavaneshwar also made a pointed reference to the invitation for emergency CMC meeting being sent on Sunday, when the Centre was aware that the Supreme Court was seized of the matter, and would be hearing the matter a day later.

Jayalalithaa also said that the storage level in the Mettur reservoir would be adequate only for 10 days' supply of water to the Cauvery delta. "That is why we have been running from pillar to post, including the Supreme Court and the Cauvery River Authority to get water from Karnataka," she said.

She hoped that the Supreme Court would pass appropriate orders when the matter comes up before it.
