Gujarat violence an aberration: Vajpayee

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Friday said the recent communal violence in Gujarat was an "aberration" and that the situation there was "now under control."

The Gujarat events came up during Vajpayee's interaction with American Jewish leaders. The prime minister said much "misunderstanding" had been spread about the state [Gujarat] since the riots in June-July.

Vajpayee said many foreign nationals had visited the state recently and returned satisfied with the situation.

He said different communities have been living together in Gujarat for centuries and the state has a history of tolerance. "After all, this is the state that produced Mahatma Gandhi and Sardar Patel," he said.
