TN approaches SC against CRA decision

The petition, which is likely to come up before the court on Thursday, said the interim direction of the Supreme Court to the Karnataka government to release 1.25 TMC of water every day to the Mettur reservoir should be restored till October to save the samba (kharif) crop, cultivation of which had begun.

It sought setting aside of the September 8 decision of the CRA to slash the quantum of Cauvery water released by Karnataka to 0.8 TMC per day.

The petition, which is likely to come up before the court on Thursday, accused Karnataka of not honouring even the CRA's decision and releasing only a little over 0.52 TMC of water on the pretext of an agitation by farmers.

The apex court had made it clear that its interim direction for the release of 1.25 TMC of water would be superceded by whatever decision taken by the CRA headed by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Meanwhile, state Law Minister D B Chandre Gowda asserted that Karnataka has followed the Supreme Court's order and was ensuring release of 0.8 TMC of water to Tamil Nadu as decided by the CRA, even as those against the release of water called for a Bangalore bandh on Thursday.

Inflows into the Krishnarajasagar, Kabini, Hemavathy and Harangi reservoirs had improved since last week, Gowda and Water Resources Minister H K Patil said within hours of Tamil Nadu accusing Karnataka of not following the Supreme Court directive and even the CRA decision.

Throughout the day, Chief Minister S M Krishna discussed the issue separately with opposition leaders, farmers' bodies and prominent personalities of the state.

The Bangalore bandh call by some organisations is being supported by the JD(S), JD(U), the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, Rajakumar Fans' Association and the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
