Made Gowda threatens to launch indefinite fast

Sadananda R in Chamarajanagar

Cauvery River Protection Committee chairman G Made Gowda has threatened to launch an indefinite fast in Mandya district from Wednesday to protest against the Karnataka government's decision to release water to Tamil Nadu.

He has also asked farmers in the district to launch an indefinite bandh.

Speaking at a rally taken out to protest against the release of water, Gowda asked the businessmen not to pay taxes, as they would suffer losses due to the bandh.

Speaking to rediff.com, Gowda said the government was trying to put pressure on the farmers. "We will fight for our rights. Now the government is arresting leaders of the farmers. I want to warn them. They cannot terrorise us."

On Tuesday, farmers in Mandya pulled off the banners that were put up during the padayatra of Chief Minister S M Krishna. They also burnt banners that displayed the name of Ambreesh, the actor-turned-politician who represents Mandya parliamentary constituency.

Ambreesh had declared that he would resign if the government released water.
