PM cancels all engagements for the day

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who has been suffering from viral infection for the past two days, cancelled all his engagements for Tuesday as he has been advised complete rest by doctors.

"The prime minister was examined by a team of doctors on Monday and on Tuesday morning. He has upper respiratory tract infection with symptoms of sore throat, a running nose and body ache. This has been diagnosed as viral infection," a PMO spokesman said.

"Doctors attending on him have advised complete rest for two-three days," Minister of State in the Prime Minister's office Vijay Goel told PTI.

Vajpayee had been scheduled to receive his Japanese counterpart Junichiro Koizumi's special emissary and chair the annual General Body Meeting of the Nehru Memorial and Library at his official residence on Tuesday, he said.

Earlier on Sunday, the prime minister had cut short his visit to Lucknow citing a bad throat.
