EC suggests Dec 16, 19 for Gujarat poll

The Election Commission proposes to hold the Gujarat assembly elections in two phases on December 16 and 19 and has sought the opinion of the Gujarat government on the same, a source in the Commission told rediff.com.

The source said a formal announcement of the dates would be made either on October 31 or November 1 after a full-fledged meeting of the Election Commission.

Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh is expected to review the situation in Gujarat with the two other Election Commissioners on Friday, the source said.

The Election Commission has been basking is the accolades that came its way from all over the world for successful completion of the Jammu and Kashmir assembly election.

Besides Gujarat, elections are due in nine other states next year. The Commission is expected to order revision and finalisation of the electoral rolls in these states, the source said.

With the J&K election, the Commission got the experience of holding free and fair polls even in the most trying of circumstances, the source said.

In this context, it is expected to convene a meeting of the chief election officers of the nine states to discuss the modalities to be completed before holding of elections.
