Alert in Haryana district after
lynching of dalits

Jhajjar district in Haryana has been put under alert following the lynching of five dalits by a mob on Tuesday.

Superintendent of Police, Jhajjar, Mohammed Akil described the situation as 'tense but under control' and said additional forces have been deployed.

On Tuesday, a group of people allegedly witnessed the dalits skinning a cow. They thrashed them and took them to a police post.

As the news spread, more people gathered on the spot and started pelting stones on the five, killing them on the spot. Ten policemen and a magistrate were injured in the incident.

A special investigation team has been constituted to probe the incident. No arrests have been made so far, Akil said.

He said cases have been registered under sections 148 and 149 (rioting), 332 and 353 (assault on government servants), 302 (murder), and 452 (criminal trespass) of the Indian Penal Code.

He said local Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists have demanded that no case be registered against any individual.
