Police give clean chit to Mahajan in Shivani case

Six days into the interrogation of Indian Police Service officer R K Sharma in the Shivani Bhatnagar murder case, the Delhi police on Thursday sought to give a clean chit to Union minister Pramod Mahajan, against whom the prime suspect's wife had made allegations.

Madhu Sharma had claimed that Mahajan was involved in the murder of the Indian Express journalist.

Claiming that extensive media coverage of the case was "hampering investigations", Additional Commissioner of Police Qamar Ahmed said, "A few prominent papers have tried to hint at the involvement of... a Union minister. Such reports have no authentic basis."

He also claimed that the police had made "very positive headway in the investigations" following the interrogation of the suspended Haryana inspector general of police.

Taking exception to the media's heightened interest in reporting the investigations, including "trying to obtain information from unofficial, undependable and unreliable sources" and hanging around where the questioning was taking place, he said, "All these acts ultimately hamper the investigations, require diversion of valuable resources to handle such situation, disturb the concentration on crucial investigation and may go against the spirit of law."

"In fact, such a reportage may even be exploited by the defence later," he said.
