Seven CRPF soldiers killed in Manipur ambush

Seven soldiers were killed when insurgents ambushed a Central Reserve Police Force patrol at Jivan Nagar in Manipur's Bishenpur district on Wednesday morning, sources said.

The insurgents belonged to the Manipur People's Army, armed wing of the separatist United National Liberation Front. The soldiers belonged to the 110th CRPF battalion.

The CRPF retaliated and the exchange of fire lasted for several hours. Casualty on the side of the insurgents, however, was not known.

The ultras looted a number of sophisticated arms including a mortar, two self-loading rifles, one AK 47 rifle, one folding carbine and some rounds of ammunition.

The insurgents were hiding in the roadside jungle before attacking the soldiers.

They escaped into the jungle after the attack.

A massive manhunt in the area has been launched.

Meanwhile, security personnel have been deployed to protect the Loktak Hydro Electric project.
