Sonia Gandhi decides not to host Iftar party

Congress party president Sonia Gandhi has decided not to host the traditional Iftar party due to the suffering caused to the people in several drought-affected states and in riot-hit Gujarat.

"Every year, we observe the holy month of Ramzan with an Iftar at the All India Congress Committee. It is a gesture of participation in an event of great significance to our Muslim friends. This year too, I was looking forward to inviting you all to join our annual Iftar."

"But on account of the agony and suffering of the people of several drought-affected states and thousands in Gujarat whose hardships are unrelieved, I have decided not to have one this year," Gandhi said in a statement.

Gandhi conveyed her best wishes to Muslims for the completion of Ramzan and the celebration of Eid that would follow.

Gandhi also approved the name of Mahender Singh Pal as the party candidate for the Lok Sabha by-election for the Nainital parliamentary constituency in Uttaranchal.

The Nainital seat is lying vacant following resignation of Narain Dutt Tiwari following his appointment as the chief minister of the state.
