Jharkhand celebrates second birthday on Friday

Amidst a boycott by two constituents of the ruling coalition, the Samata Party and the Janata Dal United, the state of Jharkhand will turn two on Friday, November 15. Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani will attend the celebrations.

The opposition comprising the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Congress, Jharkhand Disom Party, Jharkhand Party, Jharkhand Vikas Dal, and the Left parties, has also decided not to take part in the celebrations.

State Samata Party president Ramesh Singh Munda and JD-U chief Goutam Sagar Rana called the state's 'big budget' celebrations a tamasha. They said their parties would observe the day as 'Sankalp Diwas' [Resolution Day] because it coincides with the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda.

The All Jharkhand Students Union, another partner in the National Democratic Alliance government, however, supports the celebrations, AJSU president and Road Construction Minister Sudesh Mahato said.

The Shibu Soren-led JMM will organise a separate function at Godda on the day, keeping in mind the December 12 Lok Sabha bypoll for the Godda seat. They have also challenged Chief Minister Babulal Marandi to match their crowd turnout.
