Sabotage led to Shramjeevi Express mishap: Probe

Sabotage of railway tracks led to the derailment of the Patna-bound Shramjeevi Express on May 12 at Manikalan (near Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh) in which 12 passengers were killed and 49 injured, according to preliminary findings of the official probe into the incident.

The cause of the accident was most probably the opening of the fish plated joint of the right hand side rail and removing of the keys of the right side rail, says the preliminary report forwarded to the government by Commissioner of Railway Safety G P Garg.

The aforesaid act caused misalignment at the joint during the passage of the locomotive of the train, the report said, according to a Northern Railway release in Delhi.

Based on the recommendations, necessary action, including lodging of a First Information Report, is being taken at Jaunpur, Northern Railway spokesman Davinder P S Sandhu said.
