Heavy build-up by India hampering
fight against terrorism: Pakistan

Pakistan on Friday said that heavy military build-up by India on its borders has hampered Islamabad's efforts to fight terrorists in Afghanistan.

"Rising military tensions with India have come to a point, where Pakistan was forced to withdraw its forces from the Afghan border," Defence spokesman Major General Rashid Qureshi said.

"We are part of the international coalition to fight terrorism. We are doing our best to do it not only on the borders between Afghanistan and Pakistan, but also within Pakistan, where there are elements, extremist elements. So we are trying our best to combat this menace," he told Voice of America.

General Qureshi said the international community needs to do more to move India away from a possible war with Pakistan. "Unfortunately, not enough attention is being paid to what is happening, what the Indians are doing on the borders with Pakistan," he said.

He said the "UK and US were conscious of the fact that the current Indo-Pak stand-off will totally destabilise the war against terrorism. But we expect and we hope that greater pressure is brought on India," he said.

Qureshi said Kashmir issue should be resolved through talks as war is not going to benefit anyone.
