The outlawed National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah faction) has served notices to government employees in Manipur, demanding 'employee tax.'
The demand was made in a 'circular' dated January 30 issued by the NSCN (I-M) in Imphal.
In the document, heads of government departments and authorities were told that employees under the jurisdiction of the 'A C Battalion of the Naga army' should pay 'employee tax'.
It was distributed among some employees in Thoubal and Chandel districts.
'The employee tax for the current year will be collected with effect from March 1, 2002 at the rate of 24 per cent of the gross amount of one month's salary per employee,' the document, signed by 'Lt Col T R Ruivah', said.
Official sources confirmed that some employees had received the 'circular', but refused to comment on it.
The demand for 'employee tax' by the NSCN (I-M) comes close on the heels of an agitation by the Vehicle Owners Association to protest the collection of 'vehicle tax' by the outfit from vehicles plying between Imphal and Moreh.
