An optimised version of solid motor, which is planned to be used in the next Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C4) flight has been successfully ground tested at SHAR centre in Sriharikota, Indian Space Research Organisation announced on Sunday.
The performance parameters of the motor during the test on Saturday were normal, ISRO said in a statement.
The high-performance motor, planned to be used for the third stage in PSLV-C4 for Geo-Synchronous Transfer Orbit mission, is expected to increase the payload capability of the launch vehicle in this orbit by about 70 kg, it said.
Major improvements in the two-meter diameter composite third stage motor included optimisation of motor case and nozzle and increased propellant loading, the statement said.
With the present test, it said, the motor with the improvement has been successfully evaluated consecutively in two ground tests.
Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, the lead centre for the launch vehicle systems is responsible for the design and development of high performance solid motor and SHAR centre for activities related to propellant casting, motor assembly and static testing.
