India being consulted on Lankan
peace process

Eric Solheim, a key member of the Norwegian team that brokered a truce between the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, said on Wednesday that his team was consulting India on all "major steps" being taken to resolve the crisis in the island nation.

"The Government of India is giving absolute support to the peace process and we are consulting India on all major steps being taken," he said in Chennai.

He said everyone knew that both the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE were "fully alert" and were "keeping their military forces ready".

"What both parties now aim at is the situation in which tensions are defused. We believe that both the island government and the LTTE are dead serious about the peace process," he added.
