Experts divided on cause of Natasha's death

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Experts are divided over the cause of Natasha Singh's death, with a section believing that the former external affairs minister Natwar Singh's daughter-in-law committed suicide, while another insistent that there is some foul play involved.

The U-turn made by the Delhi Police which first said that there were three bullet wounds on Natasha's body, only to refute it when the post-mortem report came in, has only made the picture murkier.

Thirty-two year old Natasha was married to Jagat Singh, son of Natwar Singh, and had been living separately for last one year. She had two sons and a divorce case was pending in the lower court.

Though the post-mortem report has confirmed that she died of head injuries because of fall from a height and there were no external injuries or bullet marks, some experts do not rule out foul play.

A top police official of Delhi police speaking to rediff.com said that justice would not be done if a second post-mortem was not carried out.

"The case deserves another post-mortem. The first post-mortem does not answer many questions. It does not say anything about the injuries and how they were inflicted," the officer said, who did not want to be identified.

He said that it was strange that no one heard her cry while she was falling.

"The terrace faces the main road where there is traffic all the time. Someone must have seen her falling. There is a strong possibility that she had been murdered somewhere else and was dropped to make it look like suicide. One thing is sure that these injuries are not self-inflicted wounds," he said.

Another police official involved in the investigation said that the matter should be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation to bring out the truth.

"This is a complicated case. The Delhi police crime branch would not be able to do justice to it. I think it is best that the investigations are handed over to CBI," he said.

But, noted criminal lawyer I U Khan said that the 'evidence collected so far' indicated suicide.

"I have not been to the spot, but whatever reports have come in so far indicate that this is a case of suicide. No bullet or external injury marks have been found during the post-mortem. Then she sent SMS messages to her friends that she wanted to go to another world. These messages were sent well before she took the extreme step of ending her life," Khan told rediff.com.

The cremation of Natasha Singh is scheduled to take place at 2.30 pm (IST) on Monday afternoon.
