Key NDA allies seek Sorabjee's head

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

At least five constituents of the ruling National Democratic Alliance on Wednesday demanded Attorney General Soli Sorabjee's head for seeking permission from the Supreme Court for a symbolic puja on the acquired land adjacent to the disputed site in Ayodhya.

Telegu Desam party leader K Yerram Naidu, Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, Lok Janshakti's Ram Vilas Paswan, Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh and Janata Dal-U leader Devendra Prasad Yadav met Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in his chamber in Parliament soon after the opposition, angered by the government's stand in the Supreme Court favouring a symbolic bhumi pujan in Ayodhya, forced the first adjournment in the Lok Sabha.

They made it clear to the prime minister that it may be difficult for them to continue in his government if he jumped the track on the agreed NDA agenda, which specifically excludes the Ram mandir issue.

Later, talking to rediff.com, JD-U leader Devendra Prasad Yadav said the NDA allies would decide their future course of action soon. He, however, said it was too early to speculate whether some of them might walk out of the ruling coalition.

A TDP leader, who did not wish to be quoted, said the prime minister had summoned the AGI, who explained that he had merely interpreted the 1994 Supreme Court judgment.
