Manipur ministry expanded

Shortly after winning the vote of confidence, Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh on Tuesday expanded his council of ministers inducting 13 cabinet and four ministers of state.

With this, the strength of the six-day Secular Progressive Front ministry rose to 21 - 17 cabinet, including the chief minister, and four ministers of state.

Of those sworn-in on Tuesday evening, nine were from the Congress, the chief constituent of the SPF, four from the MSCP, two of the CPI and one each of the NCP and the MNC.

The lone woman member W Leima Devi (Congress), who was being inducted as minister of state, was not present. Front sources said she was unhappy at being denied cabinet rank.

The cabinet ministers sworn in were Thoudam Debendra, Phungzathang Tonsing, Gaikhangam, R K Thekho, Ngamthang Haokip, Abdul Salam, Nandakumar (all Congress), Yumkham Erabot, Vivek Raj Wangkhem, Y Mani Singh (Manipur State Congress Party), M Nara Singh, N Mangi Singh (CPI) and Elangbam Biramani Singh (NCP).

The ministers of state (independent charge) were A Aza, W Brajabidhu Singh (Congress), Wungnaoshang (MSCP) and S Natum Singh of the Manipur National Conference (MNC).

The chief minister told mediapersons after the ceremony that there would be a further expansion of the ministry.

Governor Ved Prakash Marwah administered the oath of office and secrecy to the new ministers at a simple function at the Raj Bhavan in state capital Imphal.

Earlier on March seven, Chief Minister Ibobi Singh, senior CPI leader Ph Parijat, NCP member Chungkhokai Doungel and Manipur State Congress Party member Govindas Konthoujam were sworn in as cabinet ministers.

The Front comprises the Congress, CPI, MSCP and NCP and also enjoys the support of the lone MNC member.

The MNC member is being treated as an independent since the party is yet to be recognised by the Election Commission.
