Babri panel opposes even symbolic puja on acquired land

The Babri Masjid Action Committee resolved on Saturday to strongly oppose the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's plan to offer a symbolic puja on the acquired land around the disputed site in Ayodhya on March 15.

A meeting of the BMAC was held at the Lucknow residence of Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament Azam Khan.

BMAC convener Zafaryab Jilani told reporters, "Be it carrying carved stone columns or performing even symbolic prayers anywhere on the 67 acres of acquired land in Ayodhya, that will amount to a violation of the Supreme Court order of October 24, 1994."

According to Jilani, "Since the central government is required to ensure status quo of the entire land, it has no business to grant permission either for offering a puja or for keeping carved stone columns."

He warned that if the government allowed the VHP to go ahead with its plans, "we will have no option but to move the apex court".

He vehemently contradicted the VHP's oft-repeated claim that all land other than the 80x60 square foot plot on which the Babri Masjid once stood is 'undisputed'.
