Kanchi seer postpones his return home

As efforts continued to find a "workable solution" to end the Ayodhya impasse, the Shankarcharya of Kanchi Jayendra Saraswathi on Wednesday postponed his return home and briefed the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on his second round of talks with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

"The Kanchi seer has postponed his return from Delhi by a day and will continue his efforts to find a workable solution to end the stalemate between the government and the VHP on the Ayodhya issue," a close aide of the pontiff said.

He is also likely to meet the PM once again on Wednesday or Thursday, he said.

Earlier today, the pontiff, who had a two-hour long meeting with Vajpayee on Tuesday night, briefed VHP international working president Ashok Singhal on his parleys with the PM.

Union Law Minister Arun Jaitely, Defence Minister and National Democratic Alliance convenor George Fernandes, Union Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani, National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra and Officer on Special Duty in PMO Sudhendra Kulkarni were present at the meeting.
