Ayodhya dispute should be settled through talks: Jaya

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Saturday said that the Ayodhya dispute should be resolved through talks and nothing should be done in violation of court orders.

"It is up to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to evolve a formula for solving the dispute and I think he is doing his best in the present situation," she said in her maiden press conference after taking over as chief minister on Saturday morning.

On the carnage in Gujarat, she said it was very unfortunate that a crisis of such a magnitude had developed in Gujarat now. The Centre and the concerned state governments must take immediate steps to bring peace and normalcy and ensure that such incidents did not recur, she said.

Such acts of violence and terrorism cannot be condoned for any reason, she said.

She said her immediate goal would be to put the state's economy back on the rails.
