Thakur's supporters ransack
BJP's Patna office

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

Angry supporters of Union Minister for Health Dr C P Thakur attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party's Patna office on Sunday protesting the possible removal of Thakur from the Union cabinet in Monday's reshuffle.

Early in the evening in Delhi, Thakur tendered his resignation from the ministerial post following a directive from Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani.

The protestors shouted pro-Thakur and anti-BJP slogans as they went about smashing window panes and breaking furniture.

Thakur belongs to the influential Bhumihar community, which is known for its loyalty to the BJP.

The protestors later went to the Patna railway stations and tried to block movement of trains. They were, however, removed quickly from the tracks by the railway police.

State BJP president Nand Kishor Yadav said there were no BJP workers involved in the protest.
