Vinay Katiyar appointed UP BJP chief

Former Bajrang Dal chief Vinay Katiyar was on Monday appointed president of the Uttar Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party unit.

Katiyar, currently general-secretary of the state unit, replaced Kalraj Mishra, who had resigned owning responsibility for the party's debacle in the assembly polls.

He would head the state unit till the next organisational elections, BJP general-secretary Sunil Shastri said in a statement in New Delhi.

On the stand taken by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad on Ayodhya, Katiyar said, "Temple is already there. But, as far as my stand is concerned, it is that of the party, namely, the temple issue would be resolved either through negotiation or court verdict."

He said his first goal would be to strengthen the BJP and "having been given the big responsibility of heading the party in the state, I will consult all my colleagues".
