India has conveyed de-escalatory
steps: Pakistan

K J M Varma in Islamabad

Pakistan on Wednesday said India had formally conveyed the steps it had taken to reduce tension.

India had informed Islamabad of the steps being taken to ease tensions including the lifting of overflight ban, appointment of Harsha Kumar Bhasin as new high commissioner and withdrawal of Indian naval ships from the Arabian Sea, a foreign office statement said.

The statement said, "We trust that the Indian government will soon announce further steps leading to the resumption of a meaningful dialogue on disputes between the two countries, especially the core issue of Kashmir."

"In a situation where the Indian forces are massed on Pakistan's borders in a dangerous posture of confrontation, the Indian decisions do not address the main causes of tension," it added.

The spokesman alleged that India had intensified 'repression' in Kashmir.

In another statement, a spokesman of the Pakistan Navy said the Indian ships were deployed in their own area of interest and Pakistan's maritime interests never came under threat during the period of tension.

The Pakistan Navy continued monitoring the movement of the India units and the situation at sea remaining fully vigilant and operationally deployed to foil any aggression, he said.
