Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Three civilians were killed and two injured on Friday morning in shelling by Pakistani troops on Jhalas village in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district.

The injured have been rushed to the hospital in Poonch town, police sources said adding the condition of one is serious.

The firing, which began around 0800 hours IST, continued for nearly two hours, the sources said.

"The villagers were working in their maize fields when the firing began," said a police officer reached by telephone.

Those killed have been identified as Puran Chand (70), an ex-serviceman Chander Prakash (45) and Abdul Hamid (40).

The state government has announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 100,000 for those killed while the injured will be given Rs 5000 by the district administration.

Additional Deputy Commissioner J S Pachnanda will be visiting the area to take stock of the situation and hand over the ex-gratia to the next of kin.

For the past one week, villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district have been targeted by the Pakistani artillery. Poonch town also suffered shelling last week.

Reports of shelling have also been received from Ramgarh region in Jammu district.
