Narayana Kurup to probe Kumarakom boat tragedy

Justice (retd) K Narayana Kurup will inquire into the Kumarakom boat tragedy, which claimed 29 lives on July 27.

The decision to order a judicial probe was taken by the state cabinet on Wednesday evening, Kerala Chief Minister A K Antony told reporters in Thiruvananthapuram after the meeting.

Twenty-nine people were drowned when a passenger boat ferrying passengers between Muhama in Alapuzha district and Kumarakom in Kottayam district capsized about one km from the shore on Saturday last.

State Transport Minister K B Ganesh Kumar has been asked to submit a detailed proposal within a week on modernizing the water transport sector, including replacing aged boats with new ones.

Meanwhile, to normalise water transport in the Muhama-Kumarakom sector, the cabinet sanctioned Rs 500,000 to the Kerala Water Transport Corporation to hire private boats and repair old ones, he said.
