UP govt seeks eight weeks time to examine Ayodhya case

The Supreme Court on Monday granted eight weeks to the Uttar Pradesh government to examine the issue pertaining to holding up of a trial in the case relating to demolition of the Babri masjid in Ayodhya in which Union Ministers L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharti are among the accused.

The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court had on February 12 last year quashed a state government notification allocating trial of the cases against Advani, Joshi, Bharti and others to special CBI courts owing to some legal loophole.

A bench comprising Justice G B Pattanaik and Justice Ruma Pal allowed the time after counsel for Uttar Pradesh K K Venugopal submitted that the new government headed by Mayawati needed eight weeks time to study the matter and take a decision.

This transpired in the court during the hearing of petitions filed by Mohammed Aslam Bhure and others challenging the high court order and a direction to the state government to pursue the case after rectifying the mistakes.

The February 12 high court order had said that it was within the powers of the state government to rectify the legal defect and issue a fresh notification.

However, the Rajnath Singh government did not pursue the matter.
