Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi resigns; assembly dissolved

Our correspondent in Ahmedabad

Gujarat Governor Sundar Singh Bhandari on Friday evening accepted the resignation of Chief Minister Narendra Modi and dissolved the state assembly.

Modi had resigned on Friday afternoon after an emergency Cabinet meeting.

The Centre reportedly gave Modi the green signal on Friday morning to go in for an early election, following which Modi convened the emergency meeting. In the natural course, the election to the state assembly would have taken place in March 2003.

It may be recalled that Modi's proposal to go in for polls in the month of May was shot down by the BJP central leadership after Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee exerted pressure.

However, the success of the July 12 Jagannath Rathyatra seems to have convinced Vajpayee and the BJP leadership on the stability of the law and order situation in Gujarat, prompting the go ahead.
