200,000 affected by Bihar floods

The overall flood situation in Bihar worsened on Saturday with incessant rains in the catchment areas of major rivers inundating the countryside during the last 24 hours.

According to a Central Water Commission report, major rivers like the Kosi, Punpun, Bagmati and Ganga were showing a rising trend all along their course in the state.

Official sources said nearly 200,000 people were affected by floods in over 250 villages in Madhubani, Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Muzaffarpur and Sheohar districts.

In view of the deteriorating situation, the state water resources department has cancelled the leave of engineers in flood-hit areas.

In an urgent message, the department's special secretary A K Singh asked the chief engineers to reach their work place immediately and take all preventive measures to protect the embankments of rivers at the sites under their jurisdiction.
