Sukh Ram to file appeal in high court

Former Union communications minister Sukh Ram, who was sentenced to three years imprisonment by a city court on Friday, would file an appeal in the Delhi high court, his counsel D S Patial said.

"The appeal will be filed within the stipulated time," Patial said after Additional Sessions Judge V K Jain pronounced the judgment.

Sukh Ram, the leader of the Himachal Vikas Congress, former Department of Telecom deputy director Runu Ghosh and Managing Director of a Hyderabad-based firm Advance Radio Masts P Ramarao, were convicted by the court in a corruption and criminal conspiracy case.

The court found them guilty of entering into a conspiracy to cause a loss of about Rs 1.68 crore to the DoT in awarding an equipment supply contract to ARM when Sukh Ram was the minister of communication in the P V Narasimha Rao government.

The court had allowed time to the convicted persons to file appeals by August 5 and kept the sentence in abeyance till that date. They were granted bail by the court subject to their executing bail bond of Rs100,000 each.

While the former minister and Ramarao were sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment each, Ghosh was sentenced to two years imprisonment. Besides, the court slapped heavy fine on the trio.

Ghosh's counsel Satish Tamta also said that he would be filing an appeal in the high court before August 5.
