I will carry forward Dr Thakur's
reforms: Sinha

Union Health Minister Shatrughan Sinha on Wednesday debunked all conspiracy theories surrounding the removal of his predecessor Dr C P Thakur and said it is the prime minister's prerogative to make changes in his team as and when he deems fit.

Talking to reporters after taking charge of the ministry, Sinha, accompanied by his wife Poonam, said he would be too happy to carry forward the health reforms initiated by Dr Thakur.

Dismissing criticism about his non-medical background, Sinha said: "If a doctor is to head the health ministry, then an army general should be heading the defence ministry, a DGP the home ministry and an economist the finance ministry."

The actor-turned-politician said he should only be judged by his "sincerity, transparency, honesty and intent."

Cornered by reporters for a liquor brand he endorsed in a print campaign, Sinha said: "That's an old advertisement. I made a mistake and I have apologised for it."

The new health minister said purchase of bulk drugs from the manufacturers at concessional rates could be one way of providing medicines to the poor.

Sinha said his ministry would consider tie-ups with private parties to create health facilities in all districts.
