Election for vice-president on August 12

The election for the post of vice-president of India will be held on August 12, Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh said in New Delhi on Tuesday

Announcing the poll schedule, Lyngdoh said a notification to this effect would be issued on July 10.

The last date for filing nominations is July 24 while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 27, he said, adding that the nomination papers will be scrutinised on July 25.

The former chief minister of Rajasthan, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, is the frontrunner for the post.

Lyngdoh mentioned that one of the Rajya Sabha seat from Maharashtra has to be filled before the vice-president's election.
