Cops nab Frenchman for sexually abusing kids

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

Pondicherry police arrested a 56-year-old Frenchman on charges of sexually abusing street children.

Didier was arrested on a complaint filed by the brother of one of his victims, the police said.

Didier was running a charity organisation for 'helping' street children, with funding from a French agency based in Toulouse, France.

The agency, Solidarity, had given him almost Rs 200,000 for his work in Pondicherry.

The police said that Didier was using the money to entice children in the age group of 10-15 years to commit homosexual acts with him.

On arrest, the police also found that Didier's visa had expired.

Didier was produced before a judicial magistrate, who remanded him to judicial custody.

Pondicherry used to be a French enclave until its merger with independent India in 1954.
