13,805 deaths confirmed in January 26 Gujarat quake: Pandya

The official death toll in the January 26 earthquake in Gujarat stands at 13,805, Minister of State for Revenue Haren Pandya said on Saturday.

"The latest tally of 12,221 deaths in Kutch district alone has been confirmed in addition to 1,584 deaths in other parts of the state, taking the toll to 13,805," Pandya told reporters in Ahmedabad.

The earthquake at Latur (Maharashtra) in 1993 had claimed 8,000 lives, he said.

As many as 166,000 people were injured in the January 26 quake of whom 19,726 sustained serious injuries, Pandya said.

The minister said 233,00 houses had been severely damaged and 9.71 suffered partial damage with the total number of houses to be reconstructed adding up to a staggering 1.20 million.
