Village head shot dead by BDO in Bihar

Soroor Ahmed in Patna

In a sensational incident, the block development officer of Bihta division in Patna district shot dead the mukhiya (head) of Sikandarpur panchayat (local civic body) Kaileshar Yadav in the former's office on Saturday afternoon.

Bihta is less than 45 kilometres from the state capital Patna.

This is the first time that an incident of this nature has occurred in the office of a Bihar Administrative Service official.

Eyewitnesses said that the BDO Binda Yadav and Kaileshar Yadav came to blows after a heated exchange during a meeting of the panchayati samiti (committee).

The enraged BDO than took out his personal revolver and shot at the mukhiya.

However, the BDO later claimed that the revolver fired accidentally during the fisticuff with the mukhiya.

However, other mukhiyas present on the occasion said that the BDO opened fire on Kaileshar Yadav after exchanging blows.

Additional Director General of Police (Patna zone) Ashish Ranjan Sinha said the BDO has been taken into custody.

The situation became tense when the local people gheraoed the BDO's office and extra police forces were rushed to Bihta.

It needs to be mentioned that of late the relationship between elected representatives and officials have not been very cordial.

Last year, three BDOs were manhandled or beaten up by MLAs in three different incidents in the state.

Earlier in another serious incident, Gaya Superintendent of Police Ravindra Shankaran was publicly thrashed by Dalit MLA Bhagwatia Devi in the former's residence.
