BJP tells cadres not to proceed to Ayodhya

In a bid to cool down tempers in the wake of killing of 'Ram sevaks' in Gujarat on Wednesday, BJP has asked its cadres not to proceed to Ayodhya to participate in the VHP-sponsored Ram temple construction movement, party sources said.

This was decided at a high level meeting on Wednesday night attended by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Home Minister L K Advani, Rural Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu and BJP president Jana Krishnamurthy.

The government is likely to take steps to see that the cases pertaining to the Ram temple controversy are decided at the earliest so that the issue is resolved peacefully, the sources said.

"Both the party and the government are keen that the Ayodhya issue be resolved without any further problems. Besides, it is felt that the sangh parivar should be told not to press too much on the temple issue as it would put the BJP-led NDA government in jeopardy," the sources said.
