Biggest staff strike paralyses offices in Kerala

In one of the biggest agitations in the state, functioning of government offices and educational institutions in Kerala virtually came to a grinding halt on Wednesday as an estimated 500,000 employees and teachers began an indefinite strike protesting the UDF government's cost-cutting measures.

According to reports received from across the state, the strike was total in all departments. However, essential services like transport, electricity and water and milk supply have been spared.

The secretarial staff in the Kochi high court, however, have not joined the strike.

Police in the state capital Thiruvananthapuram said no incident of violence was reported from anywhere in the state.

Service and teachers' organisations, cutting across party lines, are participating in the strike after Tuesday's talks between the unions and the government failed.

The A K Antony government implemented austerity measures in view of the state's precarious financial position.

Security has been stepped up all over the state to deal with the strike.
